The West Virginia Black Bears are a Minor League Baseball team based in Granville, West Virginia. The team began play in the New York–Penn League in 2015 as an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team is owned by Bob Rich, Jr. and plays at Monongalia County Ballpark, which is across the Monongahela River from Morgantown and West Virginia University.


The groundskeeper ensures that the baseball field is always in optimum condition. Proper care of the field requires maintenance done on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. He/she is responsible for taking care of the grass and non-grass areas, including the bases and baseline areas, and pitching mound. Provides support for all other events that will take place on the field throughout the calendar year. Supports community initiatives such as rebuilding a little league field. Works closely with Facility Manager during the off season and supports facility maintenance projects as scheduled.


• Trains part time staff & interns.

• Demonstrate the ability to safely operate all equipment and machinery.

• Maintains inventory of all grounds keeping equipment and makes recommendations for


• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems with equipment.

• Participates in snow removal as needed.

• Works with management to create budget and adhere to same.

• Prepares for inclement weather and coordinates tarp pulls with front office staff/interns.

• Continuously maintains the integrity of the field for regular scheduled baseball season

and Wagner College.

• Perform general baseball field maintenance which includes preparing, maintaining, and

repairing all field, bullpen, mound, plate and warning track areas.

• Assist with batting practice set-up and tear down, infield tarp deployment and removal,


• Perform turf grass management including: mowing, edging, sodding, aerating,

topdressing, irrigation repairs, as well as assisting with fertilizer and pest control

applications, in accordance with federal, state and local laws.

• Responsible for cleanliness in batting cage areas, dugouts, etc.

• Assist in maintaining a well-organized, clean, professional looking shop and break

room area.

• Service accounts and partners related to grounds keeping, including those involving

field maintenance equipment.

• Assist Operations department with off-season stadium projects including: storing rail &

wall padding, screens and netting.

• Assist Operations department with maintenance of landscaping of grounds outside the

stadium walls on the ballpark’s property.

• Work well with New York Yankees Field Staff, roving coaches and executives.

• Work additional off-season and non-game day events (high school games, showcases,

marathons, etc).

• Be a team player and an active part of the front office staff.


• 3-5 years turf management. Baseball experience (dirt) is mandatory. Degree in Turf

Management is preferred.

• Ability to express ideas and convey information effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Microsoft Office skills

• Must have the ability to effectively adapt to work environment that is in constant change

due to weather.

• Able to perform the following physical tasks: bend, squat, kneel, twist, climb flights of

stairs, walk on uneven ground, walk/run up and down ramps, walk and stand for extended

periods of time.

• Candidate must have a valid Driver’s License with a driving record in good standing.

• Candidate must be able to perform physical tasks, with or without accommodation such

as lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.

• Hours vary according to the game and event schedule. Must be available to work days,

nights, weekends and holidays.
