PURPOSE STATEMENT

Accountable for contributing to Technology Platform development within Rich’s R&D, Global Technology group. The successful candidate will be responsible for development of new formulation and process technologies focused primarily on emulsion technology. The candidate will also collaborate and develop relationships with our broader R&D community to drive and support platform development initiatives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/OUTCOMES

Technology Development
•    Drives innovation through the development of new products, technologies, and product platforms.
•    Provides solutions to a wide range of difficult problems by applying advanced technical knowledge and critical thinking.
•    Organizes, executes and interprets advanced technical research projects in product or process development through the application of advanced principles in food chemistry, microbiology and engineering.
•    Develops prototype products using research lab, pilot lab, manufacturing facilities and equipment that meet project criteria from bench top through scale up.
•    Applies a clear understanding of ingredient structure/function relationships to deliver innovative product/product solutions.
•    Employs quantitative methods to assess product performance, process interactions and failure mechanisms. Examples include bench top, testing, physiochemical analysis, and process monitoring.
•    Evaluates existing and new ingredient and process technologies.
•    Operates and maintains pilot lab and research lab equipment. 
•    Designs and conducts shelf-life studies, including product and package performance under various conditions.
•    Evaluates and baselines competitive products.
•    Works with outside labs, universities, co-manufacturers, ingredient suppliers and equipment vendors as needed by project activity.

•    Manages and conducts multiple, independent, and complex research and/or development projects.  Defines project objectives, organizing and prioritizing tasks and conducting experiments and analyses.
•    Utilizes experimental design and statistical analysis understand ingredient and process interaction, shelf life and modes of failure.
•    Presents concepts, products, and technologies to internal and external customers.
•    Demonstrates clear understanding of IP best practices and patenting processes.

Collaboration 
•    Collaborates as member of inter-regional and cross-functional teams to deliver technology platforms. Establishes and maintains relationships with external technology partners in industry and academia.
•    Proactively contributes and collaborates in the Technology Development processes. 
•    Serves as subject matter expert for the corporation in their area of expertise within Rich’s R&D organization and technical community to further future product and process innovation, train colleagues and facilitate problem solving.
•    Participates in root cause analysis, develops technical solutions, and implement changes as a member of cross-functional teams,
•    Ensures the work environment is sanitary, safe and orderly. 
•    Documents all experiments (methodologies, formulas, process, results) and inventions which according to departmental protocol.
 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

•    Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Food Engineering or related field with 6+ years job related experience in food preparation/food industry and applied research. Or M.S. Food Science, Food Engineering or related field with 3+ years job related experience in food preparation/food industry and applied research.

•    Holds expertise and experience in formulating emulsions, foams, beverages, creams, sauces, toppings, mousses, etc. 

•    Proven record of independently achieved accomplishments as demonstrated by products/process / technological innovation and/or improvement.

•    Possesses a broad understanding of Food Science and Engineering (e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, nutrition, etc.) acquired through both lecture and laboratory work.

•    Has a solid understanding of ingredient functionality and interactions in the areas of fats/oils, protein, hydrocolloids, emulsifiers, and sweeteners.

•    Well-rounded knowledge of unit operation dairy processing; dry ingredient handling, mixing, fluid transfer, pasteurization, sterilization, homogenization, cooling, aeration, and packaging.

•    Knowledge of statistics, designs of experiment and their practical application.

•    Solid verbal and written communication skills including solid presentation skills

•    Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment

•    Ability to compare, distinguish and correlate differences in products and ingredients by organoleptic and analytical methods 

•    Manual dexterity required to operate various equipment.

•    Travel up to 20%
