PURPOSE STATEMENT

The groundskeeper ensures that the baseball field is always in optimum condition. Proper care of the field requires maintenance done on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. He/she is responsible for taking care of the turf and dugout areas, including the bases, baseline areas and pitching mound. Provides support for all other events that will take place on the field throughout the calendar year. Works closely with the Director of Ballpark Operations during the off-season and supports facility maintenance projects as scheduled.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/OUTCOMES

The groundskeeper must maintain a professional baseball field to major league standards. Duties include infield maintenance, edging, mound/plate repair, batting practice setup and teardown, pre/post maintenance, fertilizer and spray applications, hiring and managing the gameday crew, and radar. The head groundskeeper also supervises and participates in a variety of general landscaping activities such as tree trimming, removal of leaves and trash from landscaping areas, snow removal operations from stadium grounds, etc.

  • Demonstrate the ability to safely operate all equipment and machinery
  • Maintain inventory of all grounds keeping equipment and make recommendations for repairs
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems with equipment
  • Participates in snow removal as needed
  • Prepare for inclement weather and advises on hazardous weather conditions
  • Continuously maintains the integrity of the field for West Virginia University Baseball season and fall baseball schedule and the West Virginia Black Bears baseball season (June – September)
  • Perform general baseball field maintenance which includes preparing, maintaining and repairing all pitchers’ mounds
  • Grooming the playing surface and performing basic turf maintenance and/or repairs
  • Assist Operations department with off-season stadium projects including: storing rail and wall padding, screens and netting
  • Responsible for cleanliness in batting cage areas, dugouts, etc.
  • Assist Operations department with maintenance of landscaping of grounds outside the stadium walls on the ballpark’s property
  • Work additional off-season and non-game day events (high school games, showcases, marathons, etc.)
  • Be a team player and an active part of the front office staff

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Field/Turf Management or related field preferred
  • Previous experience maintaining a baseball field or similar sports venue playing surface preferred
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be willing and able to work extended hours, including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be highly motivated and able to respond well under pressure
  • Able to maintain a professional attitude and appearance
