PURPOSE STATEMENT

As an Ammonia Technician, you will be responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of ammonia refrigeration systems. You will ensure that these systems operate efficiently, meeting regulatory standards and maintaining a safe working environment. This role requires a strong understanding of ammonia refrigeration principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to workplace safety.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/OUTCOMES

1.    System Operation: Operate, monitor, and control ammonia refrigeration systems to maintain desired temperatures and conditions.
2.    Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine inspections, lubrications, and adjustments on equipment to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns.
3.    Troubleshooting: Identify and diagnose issues with ammonia refrigeration systems, including mechanical, electrical, and control system components. Implement effective solutions to resolve problems promptly.
4.    Repair and Maintenance: Conduct repairs and replacements of defective parts, components, or systems as needed. This includes compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, and associated equipment.
5.    Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols related to the handling, storage, and use of ammonia. Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain accurate records of safety-related activities.
6.    Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergency situations, such as leaks or system failures, following established procedures to mitigate risks and minimize downtime.
7.    Documentation: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment inspections, repairs, and safety procedures. Complete required documentation for regulatory compliance.
8.    Training and Development: Stay current with advancements in ammonia refrigeration technology, safety practices, and regulatory requirements. Provide training and guidance to other team members as needed.
9.    Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental regulations governing the use and disposal of ammonia refrigerants. Implement measures to minimize environmental impact and prevent pollution.
10.    Team Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with other maintenance technicians, engineers, and operations personnel to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
11.    Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely with team members and management.
Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy equipment, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces. Ability to work in temperatures as low as -20 Fahrenheit/-25 Celsius in cold storage sites while wearing company provided personal protective equipment and freezer gear.
12.    Adaptability: Flexibility to work on a rotating shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Willingness to respond to emergency calls outside of regular working hours.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

1.    Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Additional technical training or certification in refrigeration, HVAC, or a related field preferred.
2.    Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience working with industrial ammonia refrigeration systems. Experience with system installation, maintenance, and repair is essential. Successful completion of Refrigeration Operator 1 course and/or (CARO) or equivalent.
3.    Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of ammonia refrigeration principles, including system components, operation, and maintenance requirements. Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues.
4.    Safety Awareness: Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and familiarity with OSHA regulations related to ammonia refrigeration systems. Experience with ammonia safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
5.    Analytical Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities with a systematic approach to diagnosing and resolving technical issues. Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
